A cleft lip/cleft palate occurs when the tissue doesn't fully close together while the baby is in the womb. Almost always resulting in surgery, however, varying in severity. Also as one of the most common craniofacial birth defects, believe it or not, there are a ton of us. I want to help everyone cleft affected discover what a large and beautiful community there is of us out there. The best way I know how to do that is through art.
My name is Zack and I am 1 in 700.
I am traveling the world with the goal of photographing 700 cleft affected individuals to then create a fine art photography (coffee table size) book. This book will be a timeless piece of education for present and future societies as well as the current and incoming cleft community. "1IN700" will show the world that a difference in journey is an opportunity to learn, to empathize, and to grow together. Too often do we miss a chance to grasp something new because it makes us uncomfortable. I like to believe that if you do everything with a genuinely sincere intention, in the end people will believe that.  In the wise words of Jim Carey, "You will only ever have two choices in this world. Love. Or fear. Choose love."

Now, more than ever, we must choose love.
